Part 3 – “I’m In Heaven” What Will We Do In Heaven?

This week read the following three passages. They are well known bits of the Bible, but often we miss that they are actually about our eternal destiny. Try reading them with eternity in mind and consider how they might change the way you think about Heaven and Hell.

Read the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-12. When Jesus uses the phrase ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ he is talking about Heaven in both its “now and not yet” forms. How does this make you feel about your present struggles?

Read the parable Jesus tells in Matthew 25:14-30. How does this make you feel? What resources, gifts and talents has God given you? What are you doing with them? Investing is an inherently risky business, as the third servant knew. How do you feel about risk? Do you find risking easy or hard? Does your faith make it easier to take risks?

Read the parable Jesus tells in Luke 16:1-9. This can often seem one of the most confusing stories Jesus tells. What do you think is going on? Is Jesus advocating dishonesty? If not, what is Jesus saying to us and what should we be learning?

Read 2 Corinthians 5:14-21. Do you think of yourself as an ambassador of God? Whether you think of yourself as an ambassador or not, if you call yourself a Christian other people will look at you as one. Do you think you are a good or bad ambassador? What in your life could change to help you be a better one?

How would you live your life if you truly believed God was with you? What fears hold you back? Where could you be a better husband/wife, parent, child, friend, neighbour, colleague or person if you weren’t afraid? Did you know the most common thing God says to people in the Bible is “Do not be afraid”? Read Philippians 4:4-9 and try to put it into practice.

In Luke 17 Jesus says, “The kingdom of God is within you.” This week, why not try what ancient writers called ‘practicing the presence of God.’ Take time out of your busy day to invite God’s presence to be with you. Don’t say long prayers or think too much. Instead, be still. Quiet your heart and invite God’s presence to come into your heart. What happens?

How might we work with God to help our heart desires become eternal ones? You might want to try reading Colossians 3:1-17 for some inspiration. Don’t just think about theories – what might this look like practically? (If you really want to get a good understanding of a passage like this from a New Testament letter, try writing it out again in your own words, avoiding any religious language – as if you were writing so it made sense to someone who had never been to church before.)

Is there anything that really captures your heart? These might be things you find it hard to think about because you get frustrated – or it might be that you are focusing on superficial things as a substitute for eternal ones. How might God be talking to you through these? How might you respond?

Start to get excited about the resurrection! Read 1 Corinthians 15 (especially verses 35-44). It is a really good read in The Message version of the Bible.
